Master of Ceremonies: Keith Killgo, DC based veteran drummer and vocalist; former member of The Blackbyrds, who earned three gold albums and a Grammy nomination for “Walking in Rhythm.” Jeannie Jones, top DC radio DJ, will promote the “Young Artist” participation through her show on WKYS (93.9 FM)
Submission: Final date for submission is September 22, 2009. Electronic submissions only and limit of (1) submission per person.

People’s Choice Award: “People’s Choice” certificate will be awarded by the Smithsonian/SAW/BMI Showcase for “Best Adult” and “Best Young Artist” songs as voted by the audience.

Eligibility

  1. You must not have made more than $5,000 in publishing royalties in 2008 and cannot be employed as a staff writer for a publishing company nor have been paid for such services by a publishing company.
  2. Each entry must be wholly original (co-writers allowed) and shall not infringe on any copyrights or any other rights of any third party. You must signify that co-writers have given their permission for you to enter the song. Each entrant shall hold SAW harmless from and against claims inconsistent with these requirements.
  3. No composition or lyric may be entered that has been: (1) licensed; (2) placed under contract for commercial sale with any major label, publisher or other entity before the deadline.

Other Details

  1. Judging: Judges will be professional artists, Performing Rights Organization representatives, and event hosts.
  2. Notification of Selected Songwriters: Selected Showcase songwriters will be notified by October 5, 2009. We will make every effort to reach selected songwriters as early as possible to allow ample time to plan for their performance at The Smithsonian.
  3. Promotional Agreements: Selected songwriters agree to furnish a recorded version of the selected song within two weeks after notification (non-MP3 versions) for possible airplay on WKYS and for possible posting on the SAW website. The recorded song must be produced to technical standards required by SAW. SAW has the right to edit songs for length, and to omit selected songs from the website that do not meet SAW's technical standards. ALL selectees consent to having their showcase songs used in the manner as listed above as part of their prize.
